Images from Sonakshi Chaturvedi's family archive

This collection is a tribute to my grandmothers, capturing nostalgia and joy through vibrant daily rituals and cherished containers. It honors their personal legacies and reflects my aspiration to celebrate the spirited young girls behind the mature facades of brides and mothers.

In my exploration of family history , I noticed the lack of solo images of my grandmothers after they assumed familial roles. This absence highlighted an unspoken conditioning across generations, where women were too apologetic to occupy space as individuals. This realization drove my desire to celebrate my grandmothers as individuals, not just as family members.

To visually explore this dichotomy, I created wedding trousseau inspired objects with drab, rigid exteriors symbolizing stereotypical gender roles, contrasting with vibrant, childlike interiors representing their hidden aspirations, dreams and uniqueness. Each object has parts reflective of anecdotes and rituals around the specific containers ; that can be “plucked” and worn , embodying the warmth and nostalgia of cherished memories.

This collection aims to build a personal legacy for my female ancestors and myself, celebrating individuality and spirit beyond traditional roles.
